Mather, writing from a devoutly Puritan perspective, argued that the Indian Wars were a “scourge” sent by God to punish the colonists.

About the author: Increase Mather (1639–1723) was an early New England Puritan clergyman in the Massachusetts Bay Colony and president of Harvard College for twenty years (1681–1701).
